Migration and Refugee Services Legal Support Staff

Location: Catholic Community Services of Utah, 224 North 2200 West, Salt Lake City, Utah

Status: Full-time, Non-exempt, with Benefits

Salary: $15.00-$16.00 Hourly, DOE

Job Description:

Provide professional bilingual clerical support to the Immigration Program and provide Immigration case management and direct services to the Refugee clients.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Commitment to mission of Catholic Community Services of Utah (CCS) and the Migration and Refugee Services programs.
  2. Screen refugee clients for family reunification, green card applications, confirm eligibility, and assist with completing applications for those who qualify.
  3. Experience working as a paralegal, social worker or in refugee services case management preferred.
  4. Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing in both English and Spanish preferred.
  5. Clerical work and data entry are a major responsibility of this position.


Work Environment inside/outside, office, warehouse, noise, temperature, etc.

  1. This position is in a professional office environment using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.


Physical Demands including bending, sitting, lifting and driving

  1. This is largely a sedentary role and applicants must have the capacity to perform several hours of data entry without restriction.
  2. Occasional lifting of filing boxes (between 25-24 pounds) and bending.


Skills, knowledge and abilities:

  1. Must be able to demonstrate an ability to maintain confidentiality regarding client cases.
  2. Advanced word processing and computer skills required. Applicants should not require training in how to operate Microsoft Word or Excel and it is preferred that applicants be able to demonstrate a basic familiarity with Access and Outlook. 
  3. Must have an ability to travel AND work some nights and weekends.
  4. It is preferred that applicants be able to demonstrate personal qualities of openness, compassion, and graciousness when helping clients assess and face legal obstacles.
  5. Must have the desire and ability to perform clerical and data entry work with detail and accuracy with little supervision.
  6. Organizational and planning skills.
  7. Ability to prioritize tasks and responsibilities.
  8. Keyboarding and data management skills.
  9. Attention to detail and accuracy.
  10. Problem solving skills.
  11. Strong communication skills written and oral.
  12. Flexibility and adaptability.
  13. Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Education, training and or experience:  

  1. Paralegal certification or bachelor's degree preferred.
  2. Proficiency in Spanish and English. Fluency in a language spoken by resettled refugees is helpful, but preference will be given to applicants who are fluent in Spanish and English.
  3. Knowledge of relevant MS Office applications; Excel proficiency is mandatory and Access experience is preferred.
  4. Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook.
  5. Keyboarding and data entry skills.
  6. Knowledge of office management systems and procedures.
  7. Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures.
  8. Experience working in a law office preferred.


Background Screen/BCI requirement

  1. Must be able to pass a national FBI/BCI background check.

Licenses, certifications and credentials

  1. Current Utah driver's license, proof of auto insurance with minimum policy liability limits of $50,000 per person and $100,000 per occurrence, 21 years of age or older, a clean driving record, and ability to meet CCS vehicle safety requirements.

Position status and expected schedule  

  1. Full-time position, Non-exempt, 40 hours a week. Schedule can be flexible with up to 20 hours a week worked on nights and or weekends.
