Job Description:

Provide a comprehensive curriculum on health care navigation and training for newly arrived refugee clients. In a series of classes covering a variety of topics including Medicaid and insurance, health requirements in the United States, COVID-19, telehealth, how to manage appointments and medications, health-related ESL, primary care vs. urgent care vs. ER, and pharmacy. Lead clients on clinic tours to teach them how to take public transportation to their primary care physician and other health-related destination. Provide support related to the prevention, testing, and vaccination of COVID-19. Complete monthly reports and billings for health promotion services and assist the health services team with other job functions.


Responsibilities include:

  1. Provide a series of health education classes focused on navigating the US healthcare system.
    1. Work with other CCS departments, medical interpreters, and volunteers/interns to provide:
      1. An initial overview and orientation and in-depth class focused on navigating the US healthcare system.
      2. An individualized clinic tour demonstrating how to use public transit to go from the client's homes to necessary providers in the community.
      3. Education about COVID-19 including prevention, testing, and quarantine.
  2. Continuously evaluate current health education and orientation services provided by CCS and implement updates, as necessary.
  3. Support COVID-19 efforts by providing vaccine-related education, offering support related to testing and prevention, connecting clients to community resources, signing clients up for vaccine and testing appointments, providing transportation to the appointments, hosting vaccine clinics if available, and keeping a detailed record of CCS clients' COVID vaccination status.
  4. Complete and submit all necessary reporting and billing to the health services supervisor, contract compliance director, and Department of Health.
  5. Provide each newly arriving refugee with a regularly updated handout of available community health resources.
  6. Provide Safe Kids car seat orientations, as necessary.
  7. Train and supervise 2-3 interns and/or volunteers, when available.
  8. Assist the Medical team with assorted job functions, including making medical appointments, coordinating with interpreters, and other functions as needed.
  9. Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment - inside/outside, office, warehouse, noise, temperature, etc.

  1. This position is in a professional office environment using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Demands Including bending, sitting, lifting and driving.

  1. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand as necessary.
  2. This role includes driving locally to apartment complexes and meetings.

Skills, Knowledge, and/or Abilities

  1. Training and presentation/public speaking experience; including experience developing or editing existing curricula with an engaging presentation style and personal qualities of patience, openness, and respect
  2. Strong oral and written communications skills
  3. Second language preferred
  4. Familiarity with the refugee resettlement process, Medicaid, and available community resources; high degree of cultural competency
  5. Ability to work independently in a safe and appropriate manner
  6. Ability to be sensitive to the needs of clients, families, co-workers, volunteers, and other persons with whom the employee may interact
  7. Recognizes time as a valuable resource and responds promptly to the needs of clients and coworkers
  8. Proficiency in computer skills to maintain financial data, spreadsheets, database, scheduling, and e-mail in Outlook Office 365
  9. Consistently performs work assignments in a time-efficient manner and adheres to deadlines
  10. Must maintain all client information and files in the strictest confidence

Education, Training and/or Experience

  1. Bachelor's degree in health education or public health preferred
  2. Experience working with refugees, immigrants, or diverse populations

Background Screen/BCI requirement

  1. Must be able to pass BCI/FBI background check

Licenses, certifications, and credentials

  1. Current Utah driver's license, proof of auto insurance, 21 years of age or older, a clean driving record, and ability to meet CCS vehicle safety and auto insurance requirements

Position status and expected schedule

  1. This position is full-time (40 hours a week) and non-exempt.
  2. Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 5:30 pm.
